Transplantations

Rabin Medical Center (RMC) is the leader for organ transplantation in Israel, performing over 75% of transplants in the country. It is the only hospital performing transplantation on the full range of organs, and the only one with a dedicated Transplantation Department. RMC Transplant Programs provide comprehensive care to patients with end organ failure. The programs are run by two different medical fields:

  • Department of Abdominal Organ Transplantation for liver, kidney, pancreas and small intestine transplantation
  • Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery for heart and lung transplantation

The department of abdominal organ transplantation at RMC is the largest center in Israel which was established in 1982 and performs about 75% of all abdominal transplants in Israel. The program which offers also transplantation for children, at the nearby Schneider's Medical Center for Children, is the only pediatric program in Israel.

Over the years more than 2,500 kidney transplants, 500 liver transplants, 400 lung transplants, 100 heart transplants and 50 pancreas transplants has been performed. Most patients continue their follow-up after transplant in our outpatient clinics which are currently separated to various sub-specialties: lung, heart, kidney and liver clinics.

The Organ Transplant Department is based on the traditional triad of academic medicine, combining patient care, teaching and research. Combining a wide range of clinical resources with specialized expertise, the Organ Transplant Program offers a multidisciplinary approach towards patient care, integrating the expertise of transplant surgeons, pathologists, psychologists and other specialists. It provides comprehensive care to patients with end organ failure, is responsible for the pre-transplantation evaluation and preparation process of both recipients and live donors to determine patient's suitability, life-saving and life-enhancing surgery, and life-long follow-up.
