Dr. Asaf Olshinka

Facial Reconstruction at NYU Langone Medical Center, July 2015

My name is Dr. Asaf Olshinka, I am happily married and am the father of three beautiful children.

I am the Chief Resident of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery & the Burn unit at Rabin Medical Center, Beilinson campus in Petah-Tikva, Israel.

I have been a resident in the department for the last 6 years and I am approaching the last months of my residency.

Prior to my residency I served as a combat physician in the Israeli Special Forces for six years. I was awarded "excellence in service" by the Military General Surgeon. My rank is Major in Reserve Service.

During my residency I have had a special interest in the field of facial reconstruction. Since the beginning of my residency and as part of my training for a full member position as a senior surgeon in my department, for the last year, I took part in almost every facial surgery in our institute – including head and neck reconstruction (local or free flaps procedures) and took part in planning surgeries and operating children with craniofacial deformities.

I enjoy the challenge of planning the small details for right facial surgery at the right time with consideration of the facial anatomy to perform it. I am also fascinated by the changes that could be achieved in children with facial deformities and improving their functioning and appearance.

During my residency I participated in numerous research projects and was awarded The Rabin Medical Center excellence scholarship for young researcher for 2015.

I was invited, for a month, as an observer, to the Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center Medical Center, in July 2015. My tutor during this time will be Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez.

The knowledge gained could later be useful in order to improve the utility of the facial reconstruction service for adults and pediatric patients at Rabin Medical Center. Mainly for the treatment of patients with congenital or complex acquired deformity.

The purpose of my visit is to learn & gain state of the art tools and techniques that I will be able to implement in our department.

I appreciate the help your organization has been offering our hospital throughout the years.
